飛田遊郭【嘆きの壁】 道から見える１０ヶ所 大阪市西成区 2024年6月現在 Wailing Wall in Tobita Shinchi

- 大阪市西成区にある飛田遊郭（飛田新地）。大正時代にはじまり、最盛期には200軒を超える遊郭（料亭）がありました。周辺との境界に造られた高さ５ｍに近い壁、通称【嘆きの壁】が現在も一部残っており、道から見える範囲で撮りました。
【嘆きの壁】について、最も多く耳にするのが「遊女が逃げられないようにするために造られた」という説です。壁が造られた当時は、親の借金の肩代わりで売られてきた娘も多かったそうで、確かに有り得る説です。一方「遊郭は周辺と区切らなければならない」という内務省の政令により造られたという説や、元々難波の遊郭が大火で焼失して飛田に移転してきたという経緯から【（周囲の火事からの延焼を防ぐ）防火壁】の目的で造られたという説もあります。
防火壁の目的で造られた壁が遊女の逃亡を阻んだかもしれず、目的だけでなく結果や影響まで考慮すれば、一つの説に絞ることは難しいのかもしれません。
Tobita Shinchi is located in Nishinari-ku, Osaka City. It began in the Taisho era (1912-1926), and at its peak there were more than 200 brothels. A 5-meter-high wall, known as the “Wailing Wall” was built on the boundary between the area and the surrounding area, and is still partially visible today.
The most commonly heard theory about the “Wailing Wall” is that it was built to prevent prostitutes from escaping. At the time when the wall was built, there were many girls who were sold to cover their parents' debts, so this is certainly a plausible theory. On the other hand, there is a theory that the wall was built in accordance with the Ministry of Home Affairs' decree that “brothels must be separated from the surrounding area,” and another theory that the wall was built as a firewall (to prevent the spread of fire from the surrounding area) because the original brothel in Namba was destroyed by a large fire and moved to Tobita.
It is possible that the wall built for the purpose of firewall may have prevented prostitutes from escaping, and it may be difficult to narrow it down to a single theory, considering not only the purpose but also the results and effects.
